The
weather is warming up! The touring team season is in
full swing with games hard fought from schools to military,
with friends old and new. Below is a match report from
Johnnie G, our Captain and wicketkeeper! Unusually
this was played in a rare May shower.
Royal Horse Artillery 29/30 May 2010
The Saturday 40 overs game was a tight game with a low score
to defend. We were 53 for 7 at 22 overs. They had some good
quickish & precise bowlers and the mat was a little damp
early in the game so our batsmen found it a little hard to
play. Mike Caruana played a steady innings and I backed him
up to make an important stand of 83 to have a score to
defend of 135 in the end.
Our bowlers did well to contain the RHA batsmen. They had a
3/4of good hitters and with less than 4 an over required our
score was gettable. Our biggest turning point was when Derek
Ali came on to bowl and he did a great job! At one point he
was on a hattrick but unfortunately was denied the honour.
We got them all out for 110. Well done to all our bowlers
and great fielding.
On Sunday - Ronnie, our guest
Chris Munroe, Javed Shah and Andy Naudi had to do the
"honours" of batting in the rain! Our visitors didn't mind
and said, "We're here to play cricket", so we started the
game with a reduced match of 30 overs per side. Of course
when it got a little too slippery in the outfield ( after
about 12 overs) the umpire Pierre correctly and wisely
stopped play till it cleared up a bit. We had an early lunch
and we were lucky the skies cleared up in the afternoon.
Ronnie batted really well and Joy tested his shoulder out
too but it was our Andy Naudi who kept the game "alive" with
some great hits for his 88. Well done Andy (to follow
Nowell's & Andy Lenard's innings lately!).
It was always going to be quite a task for RHA to reach our
161, but we fielded great, apart from Will Nicholls who kept
complaining about the grass being wet!!! OK....he was
standing in the middle of a large 4 inch deep puddle at
short 3rd man at the time!! The Marsa guys didn't let their
captain down and took 4 very good catches! Andy Lenard flew
to his right at short covers and took a blinder one handed!
Ronnie ran quite a few metres to take his catch just off the
grass! I ran towards square leg to take a skier and Regan
just gobbled up an off drive belter! And what a way to
finish the game.......our
Richard Rogers took his first wicket! A "caught and
bowled". The batsman hit it straight up in the air and
Richard took a good catch to seal the win!!! It was a pat on
the back and high fives for Richard!
